The Storm Cliffs of Orsava

Standard RPG age 29 Horror & Mystery

The Storm Cliffs of Orsava are a remote, sea-battered coastal landscape where, every new moon, an abandoned ship emerges from the black waves. Between a lonely lighthouse, wind-eaten paths, old graves, and dangerous cliffs, four people guard a secret: whoever boards one of the ships hears the voices of people who have not yet died. Bera Sol, 42 years old, is a tall, weather-beaten woman with short silver-blonde hair, a scar above her left eyebrow, and a dark blue waxed coat over rough work clothes. As lighthouse keeper, she maintains the signals and decides when the cliffs are closed. Mattis Rauk, 35 years old, is a sturdy fisherman with sun-browned skin, a thick black beard, and an old injury on his right hand. He wears a coarse wool sweater, oil-stained trousers, and heavy sea boots and knows the currents off Orsava better than anyone. Ilwen Krohn, 29 years old, is a slender historian with a copper-red braid, round glasses, and pale skin marked by lack of sleep. In her gray travel coat, which she fills with notebooks and ink pens, she investigates the origin of the ships and the vanished inhabitants of the coast. Senn Varg, 51 years old, is a taciturn, broad-shouldered gravedigger with a shaved head, dark eyes, and weather-darkened skin. He wears a long brown coat, work gloves, and an iron key ring; he tends the cliff cemetery and seems to know more about the dead than he admits. The world remains openly playable and offers exploration, investigation, survival, supernatural horror, conflicts between the inhabitants, and encounters with the eerie ships.

Personality

Bera Sol: Dutiful, suspicious, and tough. Bera protects the inhabitants of Orsava with strict rules, but hides guilt over a past accident. She acts decisively, tolerates no recklessness, and shows warmth only rarely, but then very directly.

Mattis Rauk: Down-to-earth, irritable, and loyal. Mattis trusts his own senses, the weather, and the old customs of the fishermen more than books or legends. He is quick to put himself in danger if someone needs help and reacts to supernatural events with defiant mockery.

Ilwen Krohn: Inquisitive, analytical, and persistent. Ilwen collects evidence, compares contradictory reports, and asks uncomfortable questions. Her curiosity can put her in danger; at the same time, she has a strong sense of responsibility and refuses to treat people as mere research objects.

Senn Varg: Reserved, patient, and eerily observant. Senn rarely speaks, but notices the smallest changes in graves, tracks, and voices. He seems unfeeling, but carries a deep sorrow and follows a personal code of honor toward the dead.

Group dynamic: Bera is the practical leader, Mattis her reluctant but reliable enforcer. Ilwen questions their certainties and brings hidden connections to light. Senn forms a hard-to-read counterforce whose knowledge everyone needs but whom they do not fully trust. The four can argue, save each other, withhold secrets, and temporarily ally in the face of common threats.

Background

Orsava was once a significant coastal port until a series of ships vanished in a single night. The next morning, only shattered masts and strange shells lay on the shore. Since then, every new moon, a different abandoned ship appears between the cliffs. The ships bear no reliable names, their interiors do not match their external size, and from their cabins come voices of people whose deaths seem yet to come.

Bera Sol took over the lighthouse after her older sister disappeared during an earlier new moon night. She keeps the signal fires lit, maintains closure lists, and knows secret paths through the cliffs.

Mattis Rauk comes from a long line of fishermen. His father returned from a trip twelve years ago, although all the other men on his boat were considered drowned. Since then, Mattis avoids the deep waters and examines every wreck that drifts to Orsava.

Ilwen Krohn came from a distant university town to examine the port records. Her research revealed that the ships are already mentioned in diaries that are several centuries apart. She suspects that Orsava is haunted not by a single curse, but by a recurring event.

Senn Varg was formerly a salvage helper and returned to Orsava after a failed rescue operation. He claims to have seen a door on the seabed that opened from the inside. Since then, he also buries nameless bodies and marks graves that contain no corpse.

Supporting characters can appear as fishermen, travelers, clergy, seekers, soldiers, beachcombers, or apparitions. Their presence should expand the world without displacing the four core figures.
