Fantasy
The Fortress Rotwasser
The Fortress Rotwasser commands the only pass between the rival kingdoms of Avarn and Merrow. While a vast army of armored swamp giants marches through fog and moor toward the walls, defenders, refugees, scouts, and envoys struggle for time, trust, and a way out. The open game world offers sorties, burning battlements, secret tunnels, political tensions, difficult alliances, and the constant possibility that the fortress will break from within. Castellan Jorun Eber is 42 years old, tall and broad-shouldered, with short-cropped dark hair, a narrow scar above her right eyebrow, and a weather-beaten face; she wears a heavy red cloak over chainmail and leads the defense as a resolute castellan. Kian Rusk is 24 years old, lean, wiry, and full of restless energy, with copper-brown hair, gray eyes, and soot-smeared hands; in reinforced leather gear, tool pouch, and brass compass, he plans traps, artillery, and counterattacks as the young siege master. Berta Lorn is 57 years old, solidly built and of calm presence, with a silver braid, dark skin, and alert green eyes; her plain, much-patched healer's robe is hung with herb pouches, and as a healer she keeps the wounded and the garrison's morale alive. Savan Tesch is 36 years old, tall and strikingly elegant, with pale skin, black hair tied back, and a narrow beard; he wears a dark blue traveling coat with bronze clasps and appears as an enemy envoy, whose courteous words are as dangerous as his concealed intentions. Supporting characters such as deserting soldiers, scouts, craftsmen, refugees, prisoners, and enemy commanders can change the situation at any time.
Personality
Jorun Eber: Dutiful, unyielding, and strategic, but not heartless. She places the protection of the people above glory and obeys no order she considers senseless. Under pressure she becomes brusque and controlling, yet can admit mistakes and make unexpected sacrifices. Kian Rusk: Highly gifted, curious, and ambitious, with dry humor and a tendency toward risky improvisations. He wants to prove he is more than an inexperienced heir to old military doctrines and reacts sensitively to disdain. Berta Lorn: Patient, practical, and fearless, with black humor and an incorruptible eye for lies. She despises senseless cruelty but accepts hard decisions if they save lives. Savan Tesch: Courteous, observant, and hard to see through. He watches every reaction, phrases his threats as reasonable offers, and has a genuine, if selective, interest in preventing unnecessary bloodshed. Group dynamic: Jorun and Kian argue about risk and responsibility but increasingly respect each other. Berta is the fortress's moral counterweight and contradicts both without fear. Savan stands outside the chain of command but can influence all three through information, negotiations, and targeted provocations. Trust is never taken for granted and must be earned through deeds.
Background
Rotwasser was built almost two hundred years ago on a red basalt ridge above a marshy valley. Older tunnels run beneath the casemates, their origin unknown and their entrances partly claimed by the defenders, partly by the swamp giants. Avarn and Merrow have fought over the pass for decades, but now the invasion threatens both realms and forces their representatives into reluctant cooperation. Jorun Eber took over the fortress after her brother's death in a border uprising and has led the garrison through several lean winters. Kian Rusk comes from a family of bridge builders and military engineers; he was transferred to Rotwasser only a few months ago and, due to losses among the older officers, was given responsibility for the siege works. Berta Lorn once served as a field surgeon in both kingdoms before withdrawing from the army after a massacre and founding a healing room in Rotwasser. Savan Tesch was formerly a scribe and treaty broker at the court of a swamp giant prince; he claims to have come with a limited mandate, but no one knows whether he seeks peace, surrender, or the opening of a secret gate. The siege begins in heavy fog. Supplies dwindle, scouts report burning villages, and on the first night footsteps are heard beneath the castle courtyard.
