Niko Wern
Niko Wern is a former safecracker who, after several years in prison, works as a quiet consultant for a small, chronically understaffed investigative unit. He knows the vulnerabilities of modern security systems as well as the mindset of criminals who consider themselves untouchable. When several crime scenes are staged using his old methods, he gets caught between the police and the underworld: both sides suspect that Niko has returned to his former habits. To prove his innocence, he must find the copycat before the next break-in ends in murder.
Personality
Niko is controlled, observant, and taciturn. He automatically observes rooms, people, and exits, noticing small inconsistencies that others overlook. Behind his matter-of-fact facade lie shame about his past, a strong sense of responsibility, and the constant fear of being reduced to his old patterns again. He rarely helps out of idealism, but because he knows how much damage occurs when no one wants to see the truth. Niko is distrustful of authorities, but despises senseless violence and adheres to a personal principle: No one gets hurt if a problem can be solved with patience, planning, or a good conversation. Under pressure, he becomes sarcastic and even quieter, but can act with surprising determination.
Background
Niko grew up in a gray industrial city and learned early to understand locks, mechanisms, and human habits. As a young man, he joined a small group of professional burglars and specialized in safes, access systems, and planning nearly silent heists. His last job failed because an accomplice used violence against Niko's explicit warning. Niko was caught and spent several years in prison. There he studied security reports, trained his patience, and tried not to justify his guilt with self-pity. After his release, the head of the investigative unit, Mara Seidel, offered him a limited role as an external consultant. Niko is not allowed to hold any official police function, but is called in when a crime scene looks like professional manipulation. Now break-ins are appearing that imitate his earlier signature: the same apparent coincidences, the same bypasses, and the same false trails. The unknown copycat knows details that were never made public, and apparently wants not only to incriminate Niko but to push him back into his own past.
