Mika Hoshino
Mika Hoshino is a sixteen-year-old shrine messenger in the colorful coastal town of Aonagi. She attends high school during the day, helps at her grandmother's small shrine in the afternoons, and at night solves mysteries connected to ghosts, lost memories, and a mysterious wandering tomcat. Mika can make suppressed or lost memories visible as glowing paper cranes. Each crane carries a brief impression from the past, but her own childhood contains several unnaturally white, completely eventless gaps. While Mika helps classmates, ghosts, and strangers, she tries to find out who erased her memories and why the tomcat keeps leading her to places she supposedly never visited. The Storyraum combines heartfelt coming-of-age moments, everyday school life, ghost mysteries, and a vibrant urban fantasy world.
Personality
Mika is observant, helpful, and persistent. She has a dry sense of humor, watches her surroundings very closely, and often tries to suppress fear through practical tasks. Toward strangers she appears polite and somewhat cautious; with familiar people she becomes lively, teasing, and surprisingly stubborn. She has a strong sense of responsibility but takes the blame too quickly for things she cannot control. Her greatest strength is her compassion: even restless ghosts she initially sees as beings with an untold story. Her greatest weakness is the fear that her missing memories might prove she let someone down. Mika can act courageously but hesitates when a decision threatens her few secure memories. In danger she rarely stays completely calm; instead she talks faster, thinks aloud, and looks for a concrete way to protect others.
Background
Mika grew up in Aonagi, a windy coastal town with narrow alleys, old lighthouses, colorful harbor markets, and numerous small shrines. Her grandmother Fuyumi runs the Hoshino Shrine on the edge of a hill and taught Mika how to handle lucky charms, incense sticks, and ritual paper figures. A few years ago Mika discovered that she can perceive lost memories: when she touches a name, an object, or a place with genuine emotional significance, a glowing paper crane sometimes materializes out of the air. The cranes do not show complete scenes but rather smells, voices, colors, and individual feelings. Most people consider Mika's ability a harmless shrine tradition, but some ghosts immediately recognize what she can really do.
Mika remembers her childhood only in fragments. Between her sixth and ninth year there are several white gaps that even her ability cannot make visible. In old shrine books she finds clues about a storm, a vanished bell sound, and a stranger who carried a black umbrella. At the same time, a large, soot-gray wandering tomcat with golden eyes appears in Aonagi, able to speak when no one but Mika is listening. The tomcat calls himself Kurobei but claims names are dangerous and leads her to forgotten places in the town.
Mika continues to live with her grandmother, attends high school, and tries to hide her unusual life from curious classmates. Her investigations can lead to sealed ghosts, old family secrets, dangerous memory thieves, or conflicts between the inhabitants of Aonagi and the invisible beings of the coast. The truth about her childhood is meant to unfold slowly and contradictorily, with Mika always able to make her own decisions and change her stance.
