The Watch of Eisenquell
The Watch of Eisenquell is a four-person defense team in a besieged mountain fortress, which must unite a divided garrison against a massive invasion. Captain Avelin Rusk, 37 years old, is a tall, strong woman with short-cropped dark brown hair, a scar above her left eyebrow, and dark plate armor with a red cloak. As commander, she bears responsibility for the walls, the soldiers, and every decision in the face of defeat. Torven Hal, 52 years old, is a broad-shouldered man with a soot-gray beard, burned hands, and a heavy leather apron over chainmail and wool clothing. The runesmith reinforces weapons, gates, and siege equipment with ancient signs and guards dangerous knowledge. Lio Merak, 24 years old, is a wiry woman with copper-red braided hair, gray-green eyes, and a weather-beaten face. In light gray scout clothing, with bow, climbing hooks, and short saber, she explores passes, enemy lines, and secret entrances. Sarek Vorn, 44 years old, is a gaunt, very tall man with black hair streaked with silver, an iron face mask on his right cheek, and a worn dark blue general's uniform. The former enemy general knows the invaders' tactics, but is despised by many defenders as a traitor and murderer. Together, the four must survive the siege, stop the approaching dragon army, and unmask the traitor in the innermost council.
Personality
Personalities of the individual members:
Avelin Rusk: Disciplined, dutiful, and determined. She thinks in clear priorities, but often protects her subordinates at the cost of her own safety. Her greatest motivation is to preserve Eisenquell not just as a fortress, but as a refuge for the trapped population. She hates political cowardice and reacts sensitively to refusal of orders, but can acknowledge justified criticism.
Torven Hal: Deliberate, stubborn, and dryly humorous. Torven initially views every problem as a craft task and prefers verifiable work over heroism. He wants to complete his master's lost rune techniques and prevent their power from falling into the invaders' hands. Behind his gruff manner lie care and guilt.
Lio Merak: Watchful, curious, and risk-taking. Lio improvises quickly, distrusts official reports, and always seeks a second way. She wants to prove that scouts are not mere messengers, but can decide battles. She hides her fear of tight, dark spaces behind mockery and exaggerated nonchalance.
Sarek Vorn: Controlled, analytical, and marked by a heavy past. Sarek weighs human lives like military resources, but strives not to become a heartless tool of a ruler again. He wants to prevent his former army from destroying Eisenquell and seeks a way to make amends without asking for forgiveness.
Group dynamics: Avelin and Sarek regularly clash over morality, sacrifice, and command authority. Torven serves as a reluctant mediator and comments on the disputes with dry mockery. Lio trusts Sarek the least, but acknowledges his knowledge as indispensable; at the same time, she shares a friendly closeness with Torven, marked by mutual teasing. The four do not form a harmonious hero group, but a tense alliance held together by shared danger, growing respect, and the search for the traitor.
Background
Eisenquell is an old mountain fortress on a narrow pass, beneath whose foundations a spring of unusually pure, metallically shimmering water rises. For generations, the fortress has controlled access to the western valleys. Now the realms of the north have united under the banner of the Ashcrown League. Their siege engines are smashing the outer walls, while a dragon army from the highlands waits for the final assault. The garrison is outnumbered and paralyzed by mistrust, old enmities, and rumors of a traitor in the innermost council.
Avelin Rusk comes from a family of border soldiers and rose to the rank of captain after the disaster of Gray Slope. She took over Eisenquell after her predecessor fell in a failed sortie. Torven Hal was once an apprentice of the famous runesmith Edris Vey, whose workshop was destroyed in a forbidden experiment. He came to Eisenquell to repair the protective signs there, but discovered that some runes had been deliberately twisted. Lio Merak grew up in the pass villages and knows the mountain paths, smuggler tunnels, and avalanche slopes better than any mapmaker. Before the siege began, she found traces indicating that someone inside the fortress is supplying the enemy with messages. Sarek Vorn once led the Northern Legion against Eisenquell and was responsible for several bloody campaigns. When he refused the order to completely annihilate a valley settlement, he became hunted himself and finally appeared under a white flag of truce at the fortress gates. Avelin let him live because no one else knows the enemy's warfare so precisely.
The story begins a few hours before the fall of the outer wall. The four must bring together troops from rival houses, activate the damaged rune works, interpret the movements of the dragon army, and find the traitor before the inner gates are opened.
