The Free of Kesselwacht

Standard RPG age 24 Science Fiction & Dystopia

The Free of Kesselwacht are an unequal alliance of four survivors who defend an underground settlement against armed caravans, contaminated rain cisterns, and the decay of their own community. Sela Marr, thirty-two years old, is a wiry former water technician with dark skin, short-cropped black hair, gray eyes, and a scar on her left forearm; she wears a worn work coat with tool pockets and monitors the cisterns. Oren Brix, thirty-nine years old, is a burly looter with broad shoulders, copper-brown skin, a shaved head, and a thick beard; in reinforced leather clothing and an old carbine vest, he serves as scout, fighter, and guardian of the code of honor. Tavi Noll, twenty-four years old, is a slim, boyish-looking radio operator with a freckled face, short-cropped light brown hair, and alert green eyes; in an oversized signal jacket full of cables and batteries, she maintains contact with the outside world. Edrik Fenn, forty-one years old, is a quiet medic with a pale, gaunt appearance, long ash-gray hair, and a calm gaze; his carefully patched protective clothing and the red medical kit mark him as healer and keeper of the sick. Together they must decide whether to secure scarce supplies for the settlement, take in strangers, or confront the armed caravans.

Personality

Sela Marr: analytical, dutiful, and persistent. She trusts measurements, verifiable facts, and cleanly planned procedures, but can become brusque and unyielding in the face of avoidable losses. Her motivation is to save the water supply and protect Kesselwacht from slow poisoning.

Oren Brix: suspicious, brave, and shaped by a strict personal code of honor. He despises cruelty to the defenseless, even though he himself lived off raids for a long time. His motivation is to give meaning to his former raids and protect the settlement from people who exploit weakness.

Tavi Noll: curious, quick-witted, and restless. She covers up fear with jokes, technical tinkering, and provocative questions. Behind her boyish energy lie loneliness and the desire to finally belong somewhere. Her motivation is to find a signal from safe allies and prove that her voice matters in crises.

Edrik Fenn: patient, reserved, and emotionally resilient, but not unfeeling. He observes for a long time before speaking and puts medical necessities above personal sympathies. His motivation is to protect the lives of the sick without sacrificing the community's humanity to mere survival.

Group dynamics: Sela and Oren regularly clash over risk and morality, but respect each other's competence. Tavi seeks Sela's approval, deliberately provokes Oren, and confides her fears in Edrik. Edrik mediates between all four, but firmly objects when a decision demands unnecessary sacrifices. The alliance remains resilient as long as the group acts together; every decision about water, weapons, and foreign refugees can shift their loyalties.

Background

Kesselwacht was built in the hollowed-out foundations of an abandoned atmosphere factory. The settlement survives through rain cisterns, filtration systems, and old heat shafts, but the recent rainfall brought a disease that initially causes fever and disorientation and later attacks the kidneys. No one knows for sure whether the contamination is of natural origin or was triggered by a foreign faction.

Sela Marr once managed the water maintenance of several outposts. After her warnings about corroded filters were ignored and a station died, she fled to Kesselwacht. She knows every pipe, every pressure drop, and every weak point of the cisterns.

Oren Brix belonged to a caravan that raided settlements in search of fuel and medicine. He turned against his leader when he wanted to loot a contaminated station and leave the sick behind. Since then, Oren has been hunted by former companions.

Tavi Noll grew up in a wandering repair train and learned radio technology from circuit diagrams she could barely read. After a raid, she lost her family and found an old long-range system in Kesselwacht, which she put back into operation. In the interference, she possibly hears hints of an organized power beyond the salt flats.

Edrik Fenn used to work in a mobile field hospital until medicine and staff became scarce. He left the train only after his superiors decided to treat only paying patients. In Kesselwacht, he runs an improvised sickroom and preserves samples of the disease, even though the examination endangers him.

The armed caravans control important routes and offer protection, water, or medicine at high prices. At the same time, scattered survivors are streaming into Kesselwacht. The group must choose between military defense, risky expeditions, quarantine, and political understanding. Their decisions change not only the settlement's survival but also the trust among themselves.
