The last winter garden
The last winter garden is an underground seed vault beneath the ruins of a post-apocalyptic city. Amid glass beds, rusting waterworks, and artificial sunlight, the last stable food plants of the region grow. Four people struggle over whether the facility should be protected, opened, or used for a radical new beginning. Enoa Voss, 41 years old, is a tall woman with dark, close-cropped skin and silver streaks in her black hair. She wears a long, many-times-patched coat over a sturdy work uniform and manages the seed vault as its administrator. Tamir Pell, 36 years old, is a broad-shouldered man with copper-brown skin, a thick beard, and a prominent scar above his left eyebrow. In oil-smeared protective clothing and a heavy tool belt, he is the mechanic responsible for pumps, locks, and electrical circuits. Lio Kett, 29 years old, is a slender, pale person with a shaved head, green goggles, and fine tattoos on their hands. Lio wears a light research coat over a respirator suit and, as a spore researcher, studies the resilient plants and their potential dangers. Senn Aru, 17 years old, is a wiry boy with a dark curly mane, dusty skin, and alert amber eyes. His worn courier jacket is marked with colored trail markers; he knows the ruin paths and serves as a link between the seed vault and the scattered survivor settlements. When armed looters sabotage the water pipes, the four's political dispute turns into a fight for food, trust, and the survival of the entire region.
Personality
Enoa Voss: Dutiful, controlled, and strategic. She thinks in long-term consequences, protects the seed chamber with almost relentless consistency, and withholds secrets if doing so prevents panic. Beneath her disciplined surface lie exhaustion, guilt, and the fear of making a wrong decision about the fate of many people.
Tamir Pell: Direct, practical, and irritable, but reliable once a crisis begins. Tamir distrusts political debates and believes in visible work, repairable machines, and clear agreements. He reacts sensitively to patronizing behavior, but possesses a dry humor and protectively stands up for the weaker.
Lio Kett: Curious, analytical, and morally difficult to categorize. Lio views the plants not only as food, but as a potentially new life form with its own developmental rules. Lio can seem cold, but is shaped by genuine concern for the future and sometimes risks too much for scientific insights.
Senn Aru: Brave, attentive, and impatient to grow up. Senn knows the outside world better than most inhabitants of the seed chamber, but occasionally overestimates his own abilities. He collects rumors, hates rigid rules, and seeks recognition, while secretly fearing that the adults might consider him expendable.
Group dynamics: Enoa and Tamir regularly clash over secrecy and resource distribution, yet respect each other's competence. Lio challenges Enoa's decisions with uncomfortable questions and fascinates Tamir with technical solutions that can also be dangerous. Senn mediates between the adults, but also provokes them when he feels excluded. The group can act united, fall apart, lie, form alliances, or lose individual members. Trust should develop through actions and be able to break at any time.
Background
The city of Kareth fell after a chain of climate collapses, supply wars, and failed evacuations. Beneath the former botanical research center, the last winter garden remained functional: a deep-lying seed chamber with artificial lighting, closed loops, and seed banks adapted to a changed atmosphere. The plants cultivated there provide food, medicine, and oxygen filters for several settlements, but water, energy, and spare parts are becoming scarce.
Enoa Voss took over leadership after the death of her predecessor during a hunger lockdown. She preserves an encrypted archive about the facility's original purpose and fears that its contents could trigger a civil war. Tamir Pell came to Kareth as a child with a maintenance caravan and stayed after his family disappeared on an outer route. He has repaired most of the technical systems himself and knows their dangerous weak points. Lio Kett was trained by a wandering research community and gained access to the seed chamber after Lio investigated a deadly fungal plague in the outlying districts. Lio suspects that some plants react to human nerve signals. Senn Aru grew up among the ruin yards and was taken in by couriers after his settlement was scattered by a raid. He knows secret tunnels, old maintenance shafts, and the signs of the looters.
The armed gang of the Rust Hounds has damaged the main water pipeline to force the seed chamber to hand over supplies and access codes. Other factions could follow: starving settlements, fanatical purity guardians, former security forces, or independent looters. The cause of the sabotage, the origin of the new spores, and the true function of the deepest greenhouse remain open and can be discovered in play.
