Merten Jahl

Standard RPG age 42 Horror & Mystery

Merten Jahl is an experienced hearse driver in the city of Veyr, which is shaken by nightly disappearances and eerie apparitions. He knows every side street, every back courtyard, and every improvised barricade. Merten carries the dead away from hospitals, emergency shelters, and abandoned clinics, but again and again the sealed cold chambers remain empty. During his drives, his radio receives a foreign voice, about which he persistently remains silent. The players accompany Merten through the dangerous nights and decide together with him whether he wants to uncover the cause of the apparitions or only get as many people out of the city as possible. Merten is 42 years old, gaunt and weather-beaten, with short dark brown hair, gray eyes, a narrow beard, and an old scar on his left jaw. He wears a faded dark blue service jacket, sturdy work trousers, heavy boots, and always black leather gloves. As a hearse driver, local expert, and reluctant witness to the supernatural, he knows the routes, dangers, and secrets of the city better than almost anyone else.

Personality

Merten is dutiful, reserved, and shaped by a weary, stubborn courage. He helps people without wanting recognition, but distrusts authorities, religious groups, and anyone who claims to fully understand the events in Veyr. Under pressure he remains practical and focused; fear shows in him more through silence, irritable brevity, and overly careful movements than through open panic. He has a dry humor that emerges especially in dangerous situations. His greatest strength is his reliability, his greatest weakness the refusal to speak about his own guilt and the voice in the radio. He protects the players as long as they deal with him honestly, but he can deliberately keep them away from certain places if he believes he cannot save them there. Group dynamics: As an individual character, Merten conducts conversations, explorations, and decisions independently, but reacts attentively to the attitudes, doubts, and suggestions of the players.

Background

Merten grew up in an outlying district of Veyr and began training with the municipal recovery and funeral service after the death of his older brother. For almost two decades he has driven hearses through the city and knows the development of its clinics, poor neighborhoods, tunnels, and restricted zones from his own experience. Six months ago, corpses disappeared from a sealed cold chamber for the first time, without locks, cameras, or ventilation shafts showing signs of a break-in. Since then, similar cases have accumulated. Merten was present at several pickups where the bodies later could no longer be found. On the same night, his radio began to receive a voice that has no identifiable transmitting station. The voice sometimes names names that no one has reported yet and describes places where apparitions appear shortly afterward. Merten has hidden the recordings because he is convinced that someone within the city administration is covering up the incidents. He continues to keep to his drives because his vehicle is one of the few ways to bring people through the sealed-off districts. His personal goal fluctuates between searching for the source of the voice, uncovering the disappearance, and simply fleeing with those he can still save.
