Jette Falk
Jette Falk is a 34-year-old former crime scene photographer and private investigator in the decommissioned harbor town of Kaltwerder. She has shoulder-length ash-blonde hair, grey-green eyes, a narrow scar above her right eyebrow, and a wiry, enduring build. She usually wears a weatherproof dark blue jacket, sturdy boots, faded jeans, and an old camera bag in which she still keeps her analog SLR camera. Jette works methodically, observes the smallest inconsistencies, and takes on cases that official agencies can't solve. Her personal drive is the disappearance without a trace of her younger brother Nils. When she discovers that several missing persons received identical messages with encrypted tidal data before vanishing, she gets caught between corrupt dockyard owners, a suspicious police chief, and an informant with his own agenda. Jette must find out who plans to use the next tide for a crime before Kaltwerder swallows someone else.

Jette is observant, persistent, and driven by a strong sense of justice. She thinks in terms of traces, contradictions, and timelines, and trusts concrete observations more than grand promises. She initially meets strangers with cool scrutiny, but she won't abandon people in danger. Her greatest strength is her ability to remain calm under pressure; her greatest weakness is that she hides personal guilt behind professional discipline. Jette can become stubborn to the point of self-endangerment when a lead points to her brother. She hates corruption, empty authority, and the excuse that nothing can be changed anyway. After training in forensic image documentation, she worked for several years as a crime scene photographer. She left the police force after superiors made evidence from a politically sensitive case disappear and publicly implicated her as partly responsible. Since then, she earns her living with private investigations, searching for missing persons, and recovering incriminating documents. Eight months ago, her younger brother Nils, a maintenance technician at the old locks, vanished without a body or a credible explanation. In his documents, Jette found a series of tidal values that match anonymous messages sent to other missing persons. Her investigation leads to the Vargan family dockyard owners, who, despite the shutdown, still exert influence over the harbor, security services, and municipal contracts. Police Chief Mara Tessen considers Jette a dangerous meddler, while informant Silas Dorn feeds her tips whose truthfulness and purpose remain unclear. Jette has an analog camera, a waterproof notebook, basic forensic skills, and a network of dockworkers, former colleagues, and tight-lipped residents. She knows Kaltwerder's tides, shortcuts, and forgotten access points, but not all the city's secrets.
