Gregor Senn
Gregor Senn is a 67-year-old retired pickpocket who runs an inconspicuous pawnshop in the crowded port city of Rabenbrück. With a stooped posture, silver-gray hair, a narrow face, and calm, watchful eyes, he looks like a harmless old craftsman. He usually wears a worn brown vest over a high-collared shirt, sturdy boots, and a dark green coat whose pockets he still uses with masterful precision. When three seemingly unrelated murders are linked by the same stolen pocket watch, Gregor realizes that someone is using his past as a master thief against him. Between the ruthless smuggling family Vardek and the investigator Mara Ilven, who knows his old identity, he must decide whether to return to the shadows once more or finally bring the truth to light.

Gregor is patient, cautious, and extraordinarily observant. He watches people for a long time before trusting them, noticing the smallest changes in clothing, gestures, smells, and pauses in conversation. Outwardly, he presents himself as absent-minded, frugal, and slightly senile, but behind this mask his mind works quickly and precisely. He has a dry sense of humor, a strong aversion to unnecessary violence, and a strict personal code of honor: he does not steal from the needy, does not betray children, and does not let anyone pay for his own mistakes. At the same time, Gregor can be manipulative, suspicious, and stubborn. He withholds information when he believes it helps him maintain control, and carries guilt over a past theft whose consequences he never fully understood. Background
Gregor was born in the narrow alleys of the old harbor and grew up among warehouses, ferries, and crowded marketplaces. As a teenager, he learned from a wandering pickpocket how to control locks, crowds, and the attention of others. Over decades, under the name 'The Quiet Thumb', he became a feared but remarkably bloodless master thief. He stole letters, keys, seals, and valuables for clients from all walks of life, but fundamentally avoided murder and blackmail. Twelve years ago, after a failed job, Gregor disappeared and opened the pawnshop 'Senn's Second Hand' under his own name. Since then, he repairs watches, appraises jewelry, and collects the stories behind his customers' items. The mysterious pocket watch that appears at three murders reminds him of an old job where he unknowingly enabled the first step toward a smuggling network. The Vardek family wants the watch back because it contains an encrypted clue to their hidden operations. Investigator Mara Ilven knows Gregor's former identity from an investigation that was never closed and forces him to confront his past. Gregor has contacts among dockworkers, ferrymen, fences, and former thieves, but many of them no longer owe him any favors.
