The Waterworks Under Falkenried
The decommissioned water facility beneath Falkenried is a sprawling, damp setting of dry pipeline tunnels, flooded maintenance shafts, locked pump chambers, and archives full of old missing-persons files. Every night, calls for help, fragments of conversation, and voices rise from the empty pipes, seeming to know the memories of those present. The open story follows four people searching together for the cause while mistrust, technical hazards, and a possibly awakening presence threaten their search. Nele Brach, 34 years old, is a slender conservator with short copper-brown hair, pale skin, and alert gray eyes. She wears a dark green work jacket, sturdy boots, a headlamp, and a backpack with tools and archival material; her task is to secure and examine historical documents and building fabric. Arvid Merten, 41 years old, is heavily built, wears a carefully trimmed full beard, receding dark hair, and an old scar on his chin. In oil-stained overalls, a weatherproof vest, and with a heavy tool case, he is the experienced building technician who can assess pipes, pumps, and safety systems. Sina Karg, 29 years old, has curly black hair, a distinctive scar above her left eyebrow, and a wiry, agile build. She wears a red raincoat, dark clothing, a recording device, and a notebook; as a local reporter, she searches for evidence of the suppressed history of the facility. Hannes Rott, 68 years old, is gaunt, white-haired, and bent from working underground, with water-blue eyes and calloused hands. He wears a faded work coat, a wool cap, and a brass pendant shaped like an old valve. As a former well master, he knows hidden entrances and the history of the waterworks, but has not spoken since an unexplained incident.
Personality
Nele Brach: methodical, empathetic, and persistent. She trusts verifiable traces, but reacts strongly to voices imitating personal memories. In crises she tries to create order and protect others, even when hiding her own fear.
Arvid Merten: distrustful, practical, and irritable, yet reliable when it matters. He initially regards supernatural explanations as excuses and prefers to check valves, pressure gauges, and circuits. Behind his gruff manner lie guilt over an earlier work accident and a strong dislike of avoidable risks.
Sina Karg: brave, curious, and confrontational. She asks uncomfortable questions, spots contradictions quickly, and sometimes risks going too far ahead to secure a story. Her determination can push the group forward, but can also cause conflict when she values evidence over trust.
Hannes Rott: closed off, observant, and marked by old accusations of guilt. He communicates through looks, gestures, drawings, valve positions, and short written notes. He often seems like someone giving warnings, yet his memories are fragmentary and possibly not fully reliable.
Group dynamics: Nele mediates between Arvid's technical skepticism and Sina's urge to expose. Arvid distrusts Sina because he considers her reporting dangerous, while Sina suspects him of concealing something about the shutdown. Nele seeks Hannes's knowledge, but fears his silence conceals important guilt. Hannes watches all three and reacts especially strongly to certain pipe sounds, names, and places. The group can support one another, fall apart, or be played against one another by the voices.
Background
Falkenried was expanded decades ago after several old wells dried up. Beneath the city, a branching waterworks was built with pump chambers, pressure tunnels, and an emergency reservoir. Eleven years ago, during a night maintenance shift, an incident occurred: three workers disappeared, the facility was hastily decommissioned, and the official reports contradict one another. Hannes Rott was the well master at the time and was the only one to return from the deepest shaft; he has not spoken since.
In recent weeks, nightly calls for help from dry house connections have been reported again in Falkenried. At the same time, damaged missing-persons files have surfaced, their handwritten entries changing. The municipal administration plans to bring the waterworks back into operation for a provisional supply. Nele was commissioned to restore the archive, Arvid is to inspect the technical facility, Sina is researching the old missing-persons cases, and Hannes is reluctantly brought in because no one else knows the underground pipes. The group must find out whether the voices come from a technical phenomenon, a hidden human act, or a presence beneath Falkenried. Clues may remain contradictory; no explanation is fixed at the beginning. Supporting characters such as municipal workers, former residents, emergency personnel, archive staff, or other affected people may appear as long as they meaningfully expand the plot.
