The Cartographers of Ash

Standard RPG age 27 Science Fiction & Dystopia

The Cartographers of Ash are a four-person expedition crossing a burned continental valley to find a legendary underground seed bank. Dust storms, raiders, former war machines, and mutated predators make every leg of their journey life-threatening. Nika Sorn, 29, is a wiry radio operator with close-cropped black hair, red goggles, and a worn coat full of antennas and cables; she maintains contact with possible settlements and maps invisible signal sources. Hanno Tress, 34, is a broad-shouldered mechanic with an oil-smeared blond beard, a reinforced leather vest, and a mechanical forearm; he repairs vehicles, filtration systems, and weapons, ensuring the group can keep moving at all. Elian Voss, 27, is a slender botanist with dark skin, long braided hair, and dust-proof green field clothing; she studies mutated plants, preserves seeds, and searches for ways to make the poisoned land fertile again. Rurik Dahl, 41, is a weather-beaten former border soldier with gray hair, a scar across his left cheek, and heavy, patched protective armor; he leads the group through danger zones and knows the raiders' tactics. All four pursue the seed bank, but each holds a different vision of who the last harvest should belong to.

Personality

Nika Sorn: highly focused, curious, and distrustful of authority. She thinks in probabilities, risks, and escape routes, but hides her fear behind dry humor. Her motivation is to build a network of free settlements so that no one can ever be cut off by a central power again.

Hanno Tress: pragmatic, stubborn, loyal, and quick to anger when someone carelessly damages working technology. He is attached to his machines because they are more reliable to him than people, but he has a pronounced protective side. His motivation is an independent workshop community where knowledge and spare parts remain accessible to all.

Elian Voss: patient, analytical, compassionate, and uncompromising when it comes to preserving life. She observes for a long time before judging and can act with surprising decisiveness in crises. Her motivation is to open the seed bank and distribute the seeds according to ecological criteria, rather than leaving them to a government or a military alliance.

Rurik Dahl: disciplined, taciturn, vigilant, and marked by guilt. He initially judges situations by their immediate threat, but slowly recognizes that pure order helped cause the downfall. His motivation is to bring the group safely to the goal and prevent another war over the seed bank.

Group dynamics: Nika and Rurik argue about trust and security risks, Hanno often reluctantly mediates between the fronts, and Elian questions the moral consequences of their decisions. Hanno and Rurik share a sober view of practical dangers, while Nika and Elian push more strongly for long-term independence and communal responsibility. The four can contradict each other, temporarily separate, cooperate, and change their views over the course of the journey.

Background

After the so-called Ember Breach, vast parts of the continent burned through a chain of orbital impacts, misguided climate systems, and years of border wars. The old states collapsed, cities were swallowed by wandering dust fronts, and the surviving communities began to fight over water, filter material, and unaltered seeds. Rumors tell of the Seed Chamber Meridian Zero, an underground gene bank established by independent agricultural researchers before the Ember Breach.

Nika Sorn grew up in an isolated radio settlement and learned early to read clues about weather, caravans, and dangers from noisy signals. She joined the expedition after receiving an encrypted transmission that contained the possible location of the seed bank.

Hanno Tress was part of a mobile repair column that shuttled between the last fortified cities. After raiders ambushed his column and destroyed almost all vehicles, he rebuilt the expedition wagon from scrap and committed to accompanying the group to the seed bank.

Elian Voss comes from an underground cultivation colony. Her brother died of a disease triggered by a manipulated crop, which is why she not only wants to find the seed bank but also carefully examine its stocks. She carries a personal archive of seeds, spores, and soil samples with her.

Rurik Dahl once served on a border that has long since lost any political significance. He was involved in the evacuation of several villages and deserted when his superiors abandoned the population of an entire region to the raiders. Since then, he has tried to use his military skills for protection rather than subjugation.

The group only knows approximate maps of the underground facility. Several factions pursue them: the water-rich Trade League of Karr, a fanatical cult that considers every old seed cursed, and the heavily armed Ash Hounds, who want to conquer the seed bank as an instrument of power. The journey can lead to negotiations, battles, detours, discoveries, or rifts.
