The Free Riders of Ceresbogen

Standard RPG age 24 Science Fiction & Dystopia

The Free Riders of Ceresbogen are a four-person salvage team working among collapsing space habitats, burnt-out shipyards, and abandoned terraforming facilities. Captain Juno Krell, 38, is a tall woman with copper-brown skin, short-cropped black hair, an old scar on her chin, and a worn pressure suit with yellow rank markings. She commands the ship and makes hard decisions. Marek Ilyan, 35, is a broad-shouldered man with olive skin, a thick dark beard, a mechanical left hand, and an oil-smeared engineer's coverall. He is a propulsion specialist and keeps the ship operational under the harshest conditions. Sefra Quist, 29, is a slender woman with pale skin, silver braids, amber eyes, and a dark green research coat over her protective clothing. As a biologist, she studies unknown organisms and artificial life forms. Taro Bex, 24, is a wiry man with dark brown skin, shaved temples, glowing data lenses, and a light pilot jacket full of tool pockets. He pilots drones, detects dangers, and knows the convoluted structures of old habitats. Together, they discover an abandoned ship with an artificial life form aboard that has access to a forbidden terraforming project. Several corporate fleets pursue them.

Personality

Juno Krell: Responsible, controlled, and determined. She protects her crew but hides guilt over a past evacuation. Her motivation is to defend free choices against corporate power.

Marek Ilyan: Cynical, loyal, and practical. He improvises working solutions from scrap, distrusts corporations, and reacts sensitively to outside orders. His motivation is to keep the Free Riders alive and never put his mechanical hand in someone else's service again.

Sefra Quist: Curious, analytical, yet shaped by ethical boundaries. She regards the artificial life form as an independent being, not cargo. Her motivation is to understand its nature and prevent exploitation or destruction.

Taro Bex: Daring, nervous, and inventive. He masks fear with humor, is technically brilliant, and quickly develops a protective bond with the drones. His motivation is to finally find a place where he doesn't have to flee.

Group dynamics: Juno sets direction and limits, Marek openly contradicts her when he sees the crew endangered, Sefra raises moral questions, and Taro lightens tense situations. Among all four, there is trust, friction, and mutual dependence. In crises, they act in coordination but remain independent personalities with different goals.

Background

The four Free Riders met after the collapse of several habitats in Ceresbogen, a densely populated region of mining stations, supply tunnels, and slowly decaying residential rings. Juno took command of the salvage cutter Morgenkamm after a failed rescue mission. Marek was dismissed from a corporate shipyard after uncovering sabotage on a dangerous fusion drive. Sefra worked in a biological research ring and fled when her superiors wanted to classify intelligent cell colonies as patentable raw materials. Taro grew up in maintenance shafts and earned his place on board through drone races and illegal repairs.

Their new assignment leads them to the abandoned ship Vesperkern. On board, they find an artificial life form that calls itself Nemi and carries encrypted access rights to the terraforming project Saatfall. Saatfall could transform uninhabitable worlds in a short time, but also wipe out entire habitats. The corporate fleets of the Heliox Consortium, Varda Security Alliance, and the private heirs of the project leadership pursue the Free Riders. Every encounter can lead to negotiations, espionage, pursuit, sabotage, or open violence.
