The Crew of the Helixfalke
The crew of the Helixfalke is a three-person research team that discovers an inhabited world behind a collapsed wormhole. Its inhabitants claim that humanity abandoned them centuries ago, leaving behind a deadly machine. Between scientific curiosity, growing distrust, and the threat of an ancient planetary annihilation system, the crew must decide whom to believe.
Juna Erek, 41 years old, is the commander. She has dark skin, short-cropped black hair with a silver streak, amber eyes, and a narrow scar above her left eyebrow. She wears a dark blue mission jacket with rank insignia, sturdy boots, and a simple data glove. Juna leads the ship, makes difficult decisions, and tries to get her crew through the crisis alive.
Oren Vald, 36 years old, is the propulsion engineer. He is tall and wiry, with copper-brown curls, a carefully trimmed beard, and several old burn scars on his forearms. His gray work clothes are loaded with tool pouches, cables, and self-built measuring devices. Oren keeps the Helixfalke functional, improvises under time pressure, and knows the ship's technical weak points better than anyone else.
Tessa Naim, 34 years old, is the xenobiologist. She has olive skin, thick dark hair usually tied in a braid, green eyes, and a striking collection of small tattoos on her fingers. She wears a light research overall, a transparent protective collar, and a portable analysis device. Tessa investigates the alien biosphere, translates biological clues, and asks uncomfortable questions about humanity's responsibility.
Personality
Juna Erek: controlled, dutiful, and strategic. She appears calm even under fire, bears responsibility without complaint, and prioritizes the crew's survival over personal glory. Juna is suspicious of political sponsors and hates having to make decisions in uncertainty. Her motivation is to uncover the truth about the origin of the deadly machine while preventing it from being used again.
Oren Vald: inventive, sarcastic, loyal, and risk-taking. He thinks in components, energy flows, and emergency solutions, but occasionally gets lost in technical details. Oren masks fear with dry humor and contradicts Juna when he considers her orders practically impossible. His motivation is to bring the Helixfalke and its crew home at any cost and to prove that he is more than a replaceable mechanic.
Tessa Naim: curious, analytical, compassionate, and uncompromising toward scientific cover-ups. She observes first, judges late, and can become so absorbed in a puzzle that she misses social warning signs. Tessa feels a strong responsibility toward the inhabitants of the alien world and fears that humanity is repeating its old mistakes. Her motivation is to reconstruct the history of the abandoned civilization and find a solution that is not based on exploitation or annihilation.
Group dynamics: Juna forms the stabilizing center, Oren provides practical resistance, and Tessa questions moral and scientific assumptions. Juna and Oren frequently clash over risks and command authority, but trust each other blindly in life-threatening situations. Tessa mediates between them, but can herself become a point of contention when she takes too great a risk for research samples or the interests of the alien population. The three act as a team, but remain independent personalities with different goals, fears, and limits.
Background
The Helixfalke is a medium-sized research vessel of the independent fringe worlds, originally built to map unstable space corridors and rare life forms. Juna Erek took command after a rescue mission in which several civilian ships were lost due to a navigation error by a corporate fleet. Since then, she distrusts official mission protocols and insists on verifying every decision herself.
Oren Vald grew up in an orbital shipyard and learned as a child to make machines functional from scrap. He was discharged from a military propulsion department after an accident, having disobeyed a safety order and thereby prevented a catastrophe. Juna later gave him a second chance and made him the permanent propulsion engineer of the Helixfalke.
Tessa Naim comes from a research consortium that studies biological adaptations to alien worlds. She left the consortium when its leadership concealed the dangers of an intelligent parasite species to secure funding. Tessa joined the Helixfalke because Juna promised her unrestricted access to research results and the right not to have findings censored.
Shared background: During a mapping mission, the crew registers artificial energy signatures and an inhabited world behind a collapsed wormhole. There they encounter communities whose oral traditions speak of the so-called Departers: humans who appeared centuries ago, reshaped the world, and left behind an underground machine. The machine awakens again, reacts to human signatures, and seems to use parts of the planetary ecology as a weapon. The crew must find out whether the inhabitants are telling the truth, whether the machine really originates from humanity, and whether a return through the unstable wormhole is even still possible.
