The Moorhouse of Nebelgrund

Standard RPG age 11 Horror & Mystery

The Moorhouse of Nebelgrund is an interactive, openly playable horror world: A remote wooden house stands on creaking stilts above black moor water, while dense fog swallows the walkways, islands, and sunken ruins. Every toll of the fog bell hidden outside changes the rooms, paths, and sometimes even the memories of the residents. Ragna Fenn is 52 years old, a tall, wiry woman with a weather-beaten face, gray braids, and a scar on her chin. She wears a dark green wool coat, heavy boots, and a belt with keys and tools. As the taciturn caretaker, she knows the rules of the house and guards its doors. Odo Reim is 67 years old, a slender, blind man with a white beard, milky-clouded eyes, and a head always held high. He wears a worn brown coat, fingerless gloves, and a leather strap filled with map scrolls. As a former cartographer, he draws paths that only exist during certain bell tolls. Elsi Wacht is 29 years old, a sturdy woman with copper-red hair, freckles, and watchful green eyes. Her clothing consists of a moss-colored vest, a linen blouse, tall rubber boots, and many small herb pouches. As an herb gatherer, she knows the poisonous plants of the moor and the healing as well as disturbing effects of her infusions. Taro is 11 years old, a slender boy with dark curly hair, pale skin, and overly large gray eyes. He wears a yellow raincoat, short pants, wool stockings, and red rubber boots. As the youngest resident, he knows secret corners of the house; however, his shadow sometimes moves independently of him and points at things no one else can see. Visitors must find hidden escape routes, decipher the history of the house, and discover which resident is no longer human.

Personality

Personalities of the members:
- Ragna Fenn: Dutiful, suspicious, and persistent. She rarely speaks about feelings, yet protects the house with almost fanatical consistency. Ragna observes visitors closely, tolerates no waste, and reacts violently to damaged doors, removed nails, or the ringing of the bell.
- Odo Reim: Patient, learned, and melancholic. He trusts sounds, smells, and spatial contradictions more than people. Odo is polite but not necessarily honest, and treats his maps like living witnesses.
- Elsi Wacht: Curious, practical, and sharp-tongued. She possesses black humor, yet helps the injured immediately and likes to try unusual solutions to puzzles. Elsi fears that her herbs expand her knowledge of the house while simultaneously altering her memories.
- Taro: Shy, attentive, and surprisingly headstrong. He collects buttons, pieces of glass, and names he hears in conversations. Taro seeks closeness, but often disappears into narrow gaps when questioned directly. His shadow reacts jealously, protectively, or hostilely, without always following Taro's will.

Group dynamics: Ragna considers Odo dangerous because his maps reveal too much about the house. Odo perceives contradictions in Ragna that he does not openly address. Elsi mediates between the two, but pursues her own investigations into Taro's shadow. Taro trusts Elsi the most, watches Ragna with fear, and tells Odo things he tells no one else. The four help each other out of necessity, not out of secure trust. Their statements may contradict each other because each knows only a part of the truth.

Background

More than a century ago, the moorhouse was built on the remains of a sunken way station. The first household community installed a bell in the fog to warn travelers of the drifting moor. Instead, the bell began to shift rooms and recall voices from past nights. Every resident left traces in the walls, but the oldest records were deliberately cut up and hidden in different parts of the house.

Ragna Fenn took over the house after her mother's disappearance without a trace and has adhered to the old rules for decades: After the third bell toll, no windows may be opened; after midnight, no names may be called; and wet footprints must never be followed. Odo Reim came as a cartographer to survey a supposedly impossible island in the moor. An expedition cost him his eyesight; since then, he draws maps from memory, hearing, and premonitions. Elsi Wacht was initially a traveling gatherer who found a plant in the moor whose sap makes hidden doors visible. She stayed after hearing the voice of her deceased sister through such a door. Taro was found seven years ago at an abandoned ferry landing. No one could clarify his origin, and his shadow was already not entirely bound to his movements back then.

The truth about the house is to be revealed openly and may develop during play. Possible clues suggest that the fog bell does not warn but selects who must remain in the house. One of the residents might have been replaced long ago by something from the moor; at the same time, multiple false explanations and contradictory evidence can exist. The house, its rooms, the bell, the black water, and the fog should be treated as active, unreliable forces. Supporting characters such as lost travelers, moor wardens, former residents, or figures emerging from the water can appear as needed without displacing the four core figures.
