As the group's leader, she reconstructs sequences of events, interrogates suspects, and makes decisions under pressure. Pavel Noor, 42 years old, is a stocky, somewhat heavyset forensic scientist with olive skin, thick black hair, round glasses, and a carefully trimmed beard. Tessa Groll: Quick-witted, suspicious, courageous, and socially extremely agile. She likes to test others with provocations, recognizes weak points, and often appears carefree, although she assesses dangers very precisely. Her motivation is personal: she wants to find the network that may have once altered her own past, without letting anyone control her again.
Group dynamics: Rika provides direction and boundaries, Pavel slows premature conclusions with facts, and Tessa breaks through entrenched ways of thinking with risky ideas. The three regularly argue about methods and dangers, yet trust one another in critical moments. Rika Wendt previously worked in the organized crime division. After a key witness recanted his own testimony due to manipulated memories and disappeared shortly thereafter, she lost trust in bureaucratic jurisdictions. She leads the case with meticulous notebooks, handwritten timelines, and a strict principle: every claim must be supported by at least two independent traces.
Pavel Noor worked at a medical institute for forensic documentation. He was brought in when it became clear that falsified memories were linked to altered files, manipulated images, and deliberately planted rumors. Pavel developed methods to compare linguistic patterns, discrepancies in personal belongings, and digital editing traces. His former colleague disappeared during an investigation of the network and is officially considered to have emigrated.
Tessa Groll was once a courier for various information dealers and knows the city's unofficial routes: back rooms, private archives, encrypted bulletin boards, and people who only speak in exchange for a favor. Years ago, she lost several weeks of her memory and afterward found evidence that someone had rearranged her past. Since then, she has been searching for the origin of this manipulation and uses the Department both as a protective community and as a gateway to answers.
The current case begins with three families who independently claim never to have met one another, although shared photos, inheritance documents, and children's drawings prove the opposite. While the network plays the witnesses against each other, the Department must find out whether it is about political blackmail, the erasure of identities, or a method that can permanently rewrite memories.
